Launch of project to help organic pig and poultry farmers find solutions for 100% organic and regional feed.
OK-Net EcoFeed is a project launched on 22 January 2018 to help organic pig and poultry farmers achieve their goal of 100% organic and regional feed. A key objective of organic farming is to feed animals with feed produced at or near the farm. However, in large parts of Europe this is difficult to achieve. Organic feed and livestock production is concentrated in different regions. Often animal feed must be imported from regions far away from where the animals are raised. The problem is most challenging for protein feed, which is sometimes even not available in organic quality.
Soybean is the most commonly used and cultivated protein source for pig and poultry in Europe. The Donau Soja Regional Centre in Novi Sad will support the project by providing expert advice on innovative supply chains for organic soybeans. All knowledge and expertise generated by the project will be presented in the form of practical fact sheets and videos, and made available to breeders, farmers and industry in Europe on the OK-Net Knowledge platform.
