Healthier and more sustainable diets

At Donau Soja, supporting healthier and more sustainable diets is at the heart of our mission. As part of our Protein Strategy, we work across both the plant-based and feed sector to create a more resilient protein supply.
Plant-based foods play a key role in driving this change. We believe that “healthier and more sustainable diets” is one of the five holistic pillars needed to address Europe’s Protein Challenge.

By promoting the production of regional, non-GM, and deforestation-free soya in Europe, we help brands meet growing consumer demand for sustainable, plant-based products while contributing to environmental and economic goals.

Sustainable European Soya

We support the cultivation of sustainable soya in Europe according to European Union farm regulations and Donau Soja standards

Value Chains for Plant Protein

We are working with our members and partners to support value chain developments for European plant proteins.

Research and Innovation

We take part in research and innovation activities which support the development of European soya production

1. Sustainable European soya

We support regional soya cultivation and have established the Donau Soja and Europe Soya standards which are the leading standards for the European soya sector in terms of quality and quantity. Explore the details of our certification standards here.

2. Value chains for plant protein

Together with our partners and members we have built value chains with an availability of 1 million tonnes of Donau Soja/Europe Soya certified soya from 11 European countries offered annually for both the food and feed market. This represents ~10% of the total non-GM soya production in Europe.

We also support value chain developments for European plant proteins in food grade. We closely collaborate with food manufacturers and support them though our large network of companies along the soya value chain from seed to spoon in Europe.

Our partners offer a broad range of raw materials, ingredients, finished and semi-finished goods like for example beans, flour, SPC, textured protein, oil, tofu, soy sauce, spreads, chunks etc.

3. Research and innovation

Donau Soja is part of various initiatives and projects in the area of capacity building or research and innovation to improve production and use of soybeans in Europe.

Currently we are involved in the following research projects of the food sector:

  • Microbiomes4Soy: Investigating the effect on the human microbiome/ digestive tract of a switch from a meat-based diet (red meat) to a plant-based diet (tofu)
  • Legume Generation: Boosting breeding of the major food and feed legume crops in Europe to support the EU Biodiversity and Farm to Fork strategies by increasing the competitiveness of legume crops on European farms and in value chains

Certified products – sustainable purchasing decision
