On 16–17 April 2025, Riga will host the international Baltic Grains & Oils Conference, bringing together market experts and stakeholders to discuss grain and oilseed trends across the EU, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, as well as the prospects for agricultural cargo transshipment through European ports on the Baltic Sea.

The Baltic region remains a key hub in global agri-logistics. However, several ports are currently experiencing a decline in cargo turnover. For example, the port of Riga reported a 6.8% drop in the first three quarters of 2024, handling 13.1 million tonnes.

Transit cargo from Ukraine and Kazakhstan offers significant potential for revitalising these routes. Baltic ports in Poland and Lithuania are already enhancing infrastructure for more efficient grain handling. Gdansk reached a record 81 million tonnes in 2023, while Klaipeda showed 7% growth in 2024.

In addition to transit, countries such as Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Sweden and Estonia collectively import over USD 32.5 billion in agricultural products annually – a number that continues to grow. With Ukraine and Kazakhstan already supplying an average of 800,000 tonnes of grains and oilseeds to these markets, the potential for deeper trade cooperation is strong.
