Scope 3 Webinar: How to reduce your CO2 emissions (in German)
8 May 2024
Our guests, Daniel Fitz of the UN Global Compact Network Austria and Franz Waxenecker of dsm-firmenich, provided insights into the evolving landscape of sustainability reporting and the role of Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) in demonstrating CO2 reductions. The discussions highlighted the role of LCAs in meeting regulatory frameworks and achieving sustainability goals, particularly in light of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and the forthcoming Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and how this relates to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Summary and takeaways:
- The webinar highlighted that soya in animal feed is one of the most important levers to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of animal products – especially with deforestation-free and conversion-free certified soya. However, compliance with the EUDR alone is not enough to reduce CO2 emissions or meet reporting and reduction obligations.
- Donau Soja has commissioned several LCA studies on soybeans, meal and animal products based on Donau Soja / Europa Soya certified soya: The LCAs show a reduction in carbon footprint of up to 90% for soybeans and 30-40% for animal products. This data complies with CSRD and SBTi requirements and is available in recognised databases and tools such as SustellTM and Agri-footprint.
- Sustell is a new LCA tool developed by dsm-firmenich specifically for animal husbandry and nutrition that automates the LCA process. This complete LCA tool facilitates reporting for SBTi and CSRD and includes Donau Soja branded datasets for your own calculations. Donau Soja members can purchase a licence at a discounted price.
- Choosing Donau Soja / Europe Soya in animal feed is proving to be a very effective strategy to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of animal products, while at the same time helping to meet upcoming sustainability requirements and gain access to relevant markets that demand sustainable, conversion-free soya, such as QS Sojaplus and AMA pastus+.
For those who wish to revisit the discussions or may have missed any part of the session, we have made both the slides and the recording available:
Donau Soja webinar: Outlook on European soya in 2024
18 March 2024, 15:30-16:30
What’s next after last year’s record soybean harvest? How can certified European soya help you achieve your sustainability goals?
Find a short summary and some take away messages:
- Soy cultivation in Europe is on the rise. Crop rotations with legumes contribute to sustainable farming by improving soils and improving the agronomic and environmental performance in cereal and maize rotations.
- We expect in 2024 a significant increase of the areas sown with soybeans (by 10-15%). Our forecast is based on insights provided by national soy experts, Ministries and developments in the seed business.
- Donau Soja commissioned LCA studies for soya beans and meal certified according to our standards, as well as different animal products fed with Donau Soja / Europe Soya. The calculations show up to 90% reduction of the CO2 footprint of soya beans and 30-40% for animal products!
The data is in line with CSRD and SBTi requirements and available in recognised databases such as Agri-footprint. Find more information here.
For those who wish to revisit the discussions or may have missed any part of the session, we have made both the slides and the recording available:

As underscored during the webinar, soya in animal feed is the single biggest leaver to reduce the carbon footprint of animal products significantly.

Connecting & collaborating in Vienna, Austria – recap of the General Assembly & Networking Event.
After the morning session for members only, we invited a wider audience to a networking afternoon and dinner with many interesting talks and discussions. We kicked-off the afternoon with an innovative discussion format – a fishbowl discussion. After 15 concise input statements from Donau Soja colleagues, focusing on topics from ‘Servus Super Soya’ through ‘Stop Deforestation’ to ‘Solution’, the fishbowl discussion started, in which each guest had the opportunity to participate.
With plenty of opportunity for networking and socialising in between, we rounded off the evening with two Donau Soja expert talks. Christoph Müller and Bertalan Kruppa gave interesting insights on current policy topics, the EU deforestation regulation, an update on the soya market and a 2023 harvest outlook.
